The interviewer presents himself at Hugo Claus’ home, just as he has done hundreds of times before and yet he has never begun to feel comfortable with the besiegement, the incessant questioning: “Who is Hugo Claus?” A game of cat and mouse develops between interviewer and questioner, but who is cat and who is mouse? The writer defends the lies on principle, and yet, while looking the questioner in the eye, he fabricates a truth about his life: the Claus version. If you don’t like one, you just invent another.
De versie Claus is not invented: it is based on extracts from his interviews and echoes from his oeuvre. True to the writer’s life, De versie Claus is a polyphonic monologue.
