Great Apes of the West Coast

NTGent, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura

Performance artist Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura (25) tells the story of the journey from her native Sierra Leone to the Netherlands. A love letter to her family, her roots, her people.
"In Africa I knew what the color of my skin was, but I never knew what it meant until I came to the Netherlands."

Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura shares her most personal story, trying to imagine a possible future. To do that, she has to dive into her West African culture and rediscover her ancestral roots.

Great Apes of the West Coast is a visual, musical and lyrical solo performance that tells a story of starting over, rediscovering and remembering. Using theater as a tool to revive and celebrate the light of West African culture, Bangura aims to recapture the story of the Great Apes and negate any negative connotations associated with the animal kingdom.

The stage language that Princess has created for Great Apes has been shaped day after day by merging the West African and Western European art forms, confronting their differences, similarities and unique combinations.

"Great Apes of the West Coast is the story I have always avoided telling. But lately I realize that this story is inevitable" -  Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura.
