Toneelhuis launches a new annual theme festival in March 2023. For four weeks we present, on and around our stages, a series of performances, concerts, films, and conversations around a specific theme. During this first edition, everything revolves around generations and families.
This festival interprets generations broadly and tries to ask many questions. Not only are the performances about generations and families, generations and families are also on stage together. How special is it to play or make music together as a couple or as a parent and child? If authority and tradition are now so radically questioned in our society, what does that mean for their representation in theatre? What does it mean for an older generation of theater makers? What does it mean for playing repertoire in which the classic family structures and role patterns are still depicted? And how do other models and histories come into the picture? How do other constructs affect society and theater?
