Lessingtage 2021, which initially had been planned as a live international theatre festival at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, is now being shown online because of the pandemic. In this way, an international audience will have a unique opportunity to take in a digital panorama of European theatre.
From 20 to 29 January, Lessingtage 2021 will be offering shows from across the length and breadth of the continent, from Sweden to Italy and from Belgium to Russia, without your having to worry about travel and social distancing restrictions!
Each evening, you can enjoy a different show by one of the various European theatre companies from the comfort of your chair. The participating theatres chose their contribution themselves and will give the audience a short introduction. All of the recordings are in the original language, with English subtitles. Each of the shows will be available for viewing on one evening, free of charge.
The Toneelhuis contribution is Antigone in Molenbeek + Tiresias , shown on 23 January 2021 at 7 PM.
The pandemic’s impact on theatres is different in every country; some companies have to fight to survive, while others have more means and security to withstand this crisis. Lessingstage 2021 is thus also a gesture of solidarity between the network members, in order to present each other’s work and call attention to the difficult circumstances in which we are making theatre at this time.
