Yvonne, Prinses van Bourgondië

Timeau De Keyser, tibaldus, Toneelhuis

“...a ritual of purification, with which a community rids itself of the unknowable."

Together with five other actors and dancers, Timeau De Keyser, Hans Mortelmans and Simon De Winne – collectively known as Tibaldus – are staging Yvonne, Prinses van Bourgondië (Yvona, Princess of Burgundy), a play written in 1935 by the Polish author Witold Gombrowicz. The production premiered in September 2016, after which an English version was also created for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017.

...a ritual of purification, with which a community rids itself of the unknowable. The play resonates strongly in our time, despite there having been no attempt to update it.

"Tibaldus succeeds in sharing their love of theatre and the craftsmanship of acting with the audience. Gombrowicz’s words are ammunition for the absurd dialogues that this top-notch cast delivers with verve. The combination of Gombrowicz’s play with the poetics of Tibaldus is a match made in heaven, both for the actors and the spectators. (...) With Yvonne, Prinses van Bourgondië , Tibaldus again shows that as a young theatre collective it can bring fascinating theatre to the boards: theatre driven by an intense desire to tell a story, bursting with humour and imagination and the pleasure of performing. "

Jasper Delbecke in Etcetera , 16 October 2016

"Edinburgh Festival Fringe: The story of Princess Ivona is a very strange tale indeed, based on the mock-Shakespearean 1938 drama of the same name by the great Polish absurdist Wiltold Gombrowicz; and it forms the basis for what is, in its quiet way, one of the most unexpected shows on this year’s fringe. Performed in English by seven young actors in ordinary rehearsal clothes, this version of the tale by the young Tibaldus Collective from Belgium uses no set except the circle of chairs on which the audience sits, no special lighting, and no props except a toy crown."
