As a city theatre, Toneelhuis aims to be an accessible house where everyone feels welcome, and where as many people as possible can engage with — or be challenged by — a wide range of work.Toneelhuis has long played a leading role in making its performances accessible to visually impaired audiences and to people who are hard of hearing. We welcome wheelchair users and ensure that people experiencing financial hardship can also attend the theatre. Since 2024, we have also been making efforts to open up our programme to d/Deaf visitors.

We work to make our building and performances more accessible through numerous initiatives. In doing so, we can rely on the valued support of our partners, including VeBeS vzw (Licht en Liefde), AHOSA, Onder Ons vzw, the TricS Research Group at the University of Antwerp, OPEN (Expertise Centre for Accessible Media and Culture, University of Antwerp), Doof Vlaanderen, Inter, and VGTC.

“Accessibility is a promise, not a guarantee.” We are ambitious in our desire to make our programme accessible to as many people as possible, but also realistic. Complete accessibility is an illusion; we cannot meet every individual need. But it can be an aspiration — a commitment. And so we say: everyone is welcome!
