An adaptation of Hugo Claus’ De geruchten (The Rumours, 1996) and Onvoltooid verleden (Unfinished History, 1998). Written one after the other, the two books are so closely linked that they are now almost inseparable.
De geruchten is set in the mid-1960s. After an absence of three years, prodigal son and deserter in a colonial war René Catrijsse returns to Alegem, the village in West Flanders where he was born. His arrival triggers a series of mysterious incidents and sets tongues wagging. Pervaded with a sultry atmosphere of threat and destruction, the novel has all the makings of a whodunit, but at the same time they sketch a series of disconcerting portraits of disordered inpiduals in an oppressive, narrow-minded community. So plenty of material for an exciting cooperation between the actors’ collective Olympique Dramatique and Guy Cassiers.
