Two saxophonists weave a fine web of sound into a thick fog in which an (over)sensitive young man wanders around and tells his story. “A hypnotic experience”.
De man in de mist is undoubtedly one of the finest stories the Antwerp author Maurice Gilliams (1900-1982) ever wrote. It is a real gem. In no more than ten pages, a man – Gilliams himself? – tells how one evening he has to go and repair an electricity generating station, somewhere deep in the Kempen. But it is a foggy night and he loses his way in an eerie forest. Meanwhile, his mother is dying.
Director Bart Meuleman’s De man in de mist is an intimate play in which music plays a special role. Saxophonists Bertel Schollaert and Eva Vermeiren (from the [SIC] saxophone quartet) conjure up the fog in which the anguished narrator tells his story.
“An immaculate play. Theatre in search of perfection that is accurate to the millimetre. ***” – Wouter Hillaert in De Standaard, April 2nd2012
“An impressive production. An almost hypnotic experience. Chastening and enchanting!” – Els Van Steenberghe in Knack, April 1st 2012
