(Marie Arconati-Visconti)
At the end of her life, Marie Peyrat donated the castle to the State of Belgium; the greater part of her furnishings went to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The bestowal turned out to include an unusual series of glass plate photographs in which the Marchioness posed in her fake castle (with seeming nonchalance, but unmistakably staged) dressed as a medieval boy.
For FC Bergman, this was the inspiration for a cycle of seven short, impressionistic film tableaux or vignettes. Rather than being a biopic on the historical Marie Peyrat herself, Ne Mobliez Mie is a meditation on an unnamed woman who becomes adept at shapeshifting, spinning a web of alternative identities around herself. Does she want to lose herself? Or is she actually trying to ensure her own existence?
FC Bergman previously explored this material in an exhibition for Gaasbeek Castle, and will now create a new show at the Bourla in which film and theatre interact.
