The Bourla theatre on Komedieplaats in Antwerp has an entrance for the public at the front and one for its artists at the back. Normally the doors on the two sides of the building are kept locked except in the event of an emergency.
Soon, when the show ends, the foyer empties, the public heads home and the main entrance is locked, several of those side doors will be open to provide access to a night shop, a betting shop, a phone shop, a shisha bar, a videotheque and a peepshow.
As a temporary monument to places in the city which have always been there, refuges for vagabonds, night revellers, newcomers, the lonely, the hungry, the thirsty, the curious, flaunters, addicts and men who feel the stirrings of spring.
Nocturama: a place where you can look at nocturnal animals in a set that represents their natural environment.
Since the beginning of 2015 Benjamin Verdonck has been weaving a web of projects under the title EVEN I MUST UNDERSTAND IT. Some of the projects take the form of a show and some the form of a talk, an exhibition or an installation in the public space. One form engenders the next.
