A portrait of the artist as a young kid
"I wanted to be a writer. I thought, if I write one page every day, then every year I will write a 365-page book, and in a leap year a 366-page book. It seemed to me that was enough for a writer." Toon Tellegen
SWCHWRM is the story of a boy who wants to be a writer. The play is based on the book Mijn avonturen door V. Swchwrm (My Adventures Through V. Swchwrm) by the children’s author Toon Tellegen. In Cassiers’ hands, that book becomes a story of ‘the artist as a young kid’ whose entry into the big wide world fills him with wonder and quickens his imagination.
Guy Cassiers brings together young actors from different cultural backgrounds who speak a different language at home or as their second language. Cassiers plays on the differences and goes in search of common ground and in particular a shared imagination. Thus SWCHWRM is an ode to writing and the imagination, but also to the richness and music of languages. This play, which is full of light, air and humour, is always performed in two languages: in Dutch and in a second language.
