Suze Milius

Theatre maker Suze Milius (b. 1986) graduated as a director from the Toneelacademie Maastricht in 2012. That same year, together with Stefan Jakiela and the Urland collective, she won the Best of ITS Award (Amsterdam) for the production TICKLEMEPINK. In 2013, scenographer/theatre maker Stefan Jakiela and director Suze Milius founded the nonprofit organization House Crying Yellow Tears.

Since then, Suze has worked as a director in both Flemish and Dutch theatre. Besides her work as a final director with actors’ collectives such as Urland, De Nwe Tijd, BOG./ Lisa Verbelen, Wunderbaum, Annelies van Hullebusch, Ballet Dommage and De Warme Winkel, Suze creates striking theatre productions of her own. In 2015 she made EXHIBIT, in 2016 Zwischen, followed by HUIS (2015-2017) and TALK in 2018, and recently, ALL TOGETHER NOW!.

In 2018, Suze Milius won the Erik Vos Award for up-and-coming directors. The jury report praised her “empathetic and rich view on interpersonal exchange,” which is “new, convincing and interesting.” The jury wrote: “With a tremendous eye for theatrical details in the commonplace and the absurd, Suze Milius gives her audience a compelling and good-natured look at human behaviour. The precision and wealth of details with which her actors play the characters and scenes sometimes make it seem as if they had studied their models as intently as a drawing class during rehearsals.”

Suze’s strength lies in the blending of different forms and disciplines within the performing arts. Her characteristic theatrical style is evident not only in her own shows but also in projects where she is responsible for the final direction. With her clear structures and distinct choices, Suze creates frameworks in which there is room for chaos, absurdity and unusual hybrids of disciplines. Through her unique point of view and method of working, she succeeds in empowering performers, both individually and collectively.

ALL TOGETHER NOW! is the first show that Suze has made since Corona.
