The end is where we start from

The end is where we start from

Discover the 2024-2025 season!

What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from.

Toneelhuis’s motto for its new theatre season is a familiar quote from The Four Quartets (1936-1942), a cycle of four poems in which T.S. Eliot meditates on time. Sometimes he treats time as linear, other times as cyclical or stationary. In our new creations and workshops in the 2024-2025 season, we will see time passing in review in all of its forms:

The cyclical time of days, seasons and years in Works and Days by FC Bergman.
The end times in Mantike Bloom Boom by Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe.
Predicting the future in The Truthful by Lieselot Siddiki.
Death stopping everything, while the clock ticks on relentlessly in Gorges Ocloo’s The Grief of Red Granny.
The celebration of adolescence in A Thousand Girls by Sietske Van Aerde.
The transience of youth and nostalgia for times gone by in Brideshead Revisited by De Warme Winkel.
The cruel, destructive time of war, where one man's breath is another man's death in Mother Courage by Lisaboa Houbrechts.
The longing for renewal and change in [meeuw] by Olympique Dramatique.

The end is where we start from: that includes the end of next season. For in the summer of 2025 we are closing our beloved Bourla Theatre for much-needed restoration and renovation work. But not without first living it up in style, together with you, during the Bye Bye Bourla festival.

After that we will pack up and move to the Kambala, our second and by then renovated location on the Eilandje. Kambala will be the beating heart of Toneelhuis. A new hotspot for performing arts, festivals, research, experimentation and debate. In 2028, we are returning to the Bourla. But now we are getting ahead of ourselves. First we are closing and starting.
